Astronomy Day Events:

New! May 6th is Astronomy Day!

astroday 02

The Astronomical Society of Harrisburg will hold our 2006 Astronomy Day event at a site yet to be determined from 10:00am to 5:00pm on May 6, 2006 to introduce the public to the wide range of activities in which amateur astronomers are involved.

Club members will be available to answer questions about telescopes, observing the night sky, astronomy in general, and other astronomically related topics.

A variety of equipment will be on display including different kinds of telescopes and accessories typically used by amateur astronomers. Also on display will be some of the tools and equipment that an amateur astronomer can use to build a telescope of their own. Several demonstrations on how to grind a telescope mirror will be performed at various times throughout the day. The society will also have several audio-visual displays set up, including posters, slide show programs, videos, astronomy computer programs and more; all of which will introduce and educate the public to astronomy. If the skies are clear, we will have a telescope set up at the mall entrance for attendees to partake in safe observation of our nearest star, the sun. If clear sunspots, should be visible.

There will also be several handouts available to the public at this event. NASA has supplied us with several different brochures, pictures, pins, stickers, and more, all of which will be available to the public. We'll also have starcharts and calendars of whats going on in the sky available. In addition to that, information on the society will be available including but not limited to, membership details, public observing dates, and more.

After the mall event, at 8:00 pm, we will hold an open house at the Edward L. Naylor Astronomical Center (directions) where the public can tour the facilities. Weather permitting, we will also hold a public observing session in addition to the open house, where the public will be able to get unique views of the night sky through one of several large telescopes the society owns. Another public observing session will also be held on May 7, 2006 at 8:00 PM, if the skies are clear, for the public to observe the cosmos. Please join us for these events, bring your children and family!
