Messier Objects

Franch astronomer and comet hunter Charles Messier (1730-1817) was primarily a comet hunter and found objects in the night sky that could be comets, but they did not move.  So he compiled a list of things to avoid, and we now have the list below.  His list of things to avoid are now the jewels of the evening sky.
