1955 – An Astronomy Club in the Harrisburg Area?

By: Bob King & Jack Betz

A 21 line article in the Harrisburg Evening News of January 25, 1955 called readers’ attention to the intended formation of an astronomy association in the area.

The Initial meeting was set for February 7th at 8 PM in the YMCA. At the meeting an election of officers would be conducted plus an appointment of committees.

Telescopes would be available to members and regular meetings would be held plus observing sessions, telescope making classes and a program to form a junior astronomy group.

The proposed group would also consider steps to join the Astronomical League, a national organization with headquarters in Chicago.
